The Sámi people

The Sámi people inhabit areas of Lapland in the north of Finland

They have their own language, culture and traditions that they have nurtured since time immemorial. The Sámi are known for their close connection with the land they live on.

Traditionally, Sámi people pursued livelihoods in fishing, fur trapping, sheep herding and – perhaps most famously – reindeer herding. To this day, reindeer herding is the primary occupation of up to 10% of the Sámi people, and looking after these animals is hard work. Reindeer are not keen on staying still, so herders live a semi-nomadic lifestyle, following their animals across the wilds of Lapland. After following their animals around, many herders drive their reindeer from all corners of Lapland to meet in Inari in March and April for the biggest reindeer race of the year.

Essential aspects of Sámi culture include traditional, colourful clothing, often featuring red, yellow and blue – colours that echo the Sámi flag. Traditional Sámi kota huts can be found the length and breadth of Lapland. These structures are made as temporary shelters from branches that come to a point at the top, with a wide base to provide stability in windy conditions.

Sámi food is all about what is fresh and local. Think: reindeer, fish, berries, game and birds. Classics include sautéed reindeer with lingonberries and mashed potato, creamy salmon soup, or baked cheese with cloudberries. Just the thing to warm the soul after a busy day in the great outdoors.

To experience some traditional Sámi-style activities, head out for a reindeer or husky safari on the fells of Lapland. It’s not all about tradition, though. The Sámi people have moved with the times and also taken to snowmobiles to get around. In the winter, you can experience this too on a snowmobile safari.

Visit Holiday Club Saariselkä in traditional Sámi country. For reindeer, husky and snowmobile rides, visit in the winter between October and March.
